This week brings a small flurry of end-of-the-calendar-quarter earnings reports. And for the most part, the expectations of the analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters aren't very high. Companies expected to report declining earnings in the most recently concluded quarter include America's Car-Mart Inc. (NASDAQ: CRMT), Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. (NASDAQ: BBBY), ConAgra Foods Inc. (NYSE: CAG), Jabil Circuit Inc. (NYSE: JBL), Jackson Hewitt Tax Service Inc. (NYSE: JTX), Monsanto Co. (NYSE: MON), and Sonic Corp. (NASDAQ: SONC).

So many questions: AEO, APC, C, GM, MBI & MSFT
Never mind the bears and bulls or even the pigs and chickens, I think between Wall Street and Washington D.C. the goofs and ghosts are leading the charge. What I mean by this is that the rationale for certain market activity and advisement makes no sense to me. Maybe we are not recovering from the recession but we are moving into something like a shadow economy, where people look at what is going on in the market and rationalize it after the fact, when all the real energy is in the darkness.
Today American Eagle (NYSE: AEO) was upgraded to Overweight from Equal Weight at Barclays, and Lazard Capital Markets upgraded AEO from hold to buy. Why now, after the stock has run up 65% this year, do they finally wake up and think there might be something here?

Cisco's tidal wave of deals continues
With billions in the bank and a broad technology platform, Cisco (NASDAQ: CSCO) has been fairly clear that a big priority is M&A. And this week, we got another deal: the $105 million purchase of Tidal Software.
Tidal develops sophisticated data center software solutions -- helping to manage diverse applications, such as from Oracle (NASDAQ: ORCL), SAP (NYSE: SAP) and Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT).
Of course, Tidal's business is a nice complement for Cisco, which is getting aggressive in the server market.

SAP gets zapped
Over the past few years, the software industry has undergone substantial consolidation. So far, it has worked to keep margins strong.
But the strategy is not fool-proof, especially with a likely global recession on the horizon.
Well, this is now the concern of major software players like SAP (NYSE: SAP). In fact, this week the company's shares plunged 13% to $39.68 on a gloomy earnings warning.
Going into Q3, SAP forecasts software revenues to come in at a range of $2.66 billion to $2.67 billion, up about 13% over the past year. However, in July the company thought the growth rate would be 24% to 27%.
Simply put, customers are skittish – and are also having difficulties getting financing or paying on existing contracts. Even if they want software to improve productivity, there is likely not enough juice to launch new projects.
Closing Bell: The meltdown that almost was . . . NCC, HIG, SAP, DNDN
Today was almost a totally depressing day of a bear market, but by the end of the session, it turned out to be less terrible -- just another bad day rather than a total write-off. Hopes and rumors of coordinated global rate cuts or some form of coordinated intervention helped stabilize the stock market somewhat by the end of the day. However, the initial shock of Dow below 10,000 rapidly became Dow at 9,500+ before the market recovered sharply from being down 800 points.
The bad thing about today's major selloff is that there was no sense of capitulation and no sense that panic had engulfed Wall Street. Instead, this is just orderly panic where looters and vandals cue up to take action.
Here are today's unofficial closing bell levels:
DJIA 9,955.50 (-369.88; -3.58%)
NASDAQ 1,862.96 (-84.43; -4.34%)
S&P500 1,056.89 (-42.34; -3.85%)
10YR T-Note 3.426% (-0.218%)
National City (NYSE: NCC) was one of the most active of the worst performing banks. Shares were down 27% at $2.54 in the minutes right before the closed.

NetSuite cuts loss, still growing
According to its earnings conference call, it looks like NetSuite Inc. (NYSE: N) isn't being harmed by the slow economic environment. Then again, the company provides a cost-effective enterprise resource planning (ERP) solution. Plus, the competition -- including SAP (NYSE: SAP) and Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) -- has been lackluster.
In Q2, NetSuite's revenues surged 43% to $36.6 million, a 7% sequential increase. In fact, NetSuite added more than 400 customers in the quarter. Although there was a net loss of $3.1 million, or $0.05 per share, SAP has made recent moves to increase its pricing.
Essentially, NetSuite focuses on the mid-market customer. Keep in mind that there are more than five million of them in the U.S. And, for the most part, the market is fragmented and unpenetrated.

After a day that saw U.S. equity markets decline in the neighborhood of 2%, U.S. stock futures earlier this morning pointed to a rough start Tuesday as well.
