In an Associated Press article, the court opinion is quoted as stating that "domestic partnerships that provide many of the rights and benefits of matrimony are not enough."

In pursuance of equal footing, gay, lesbian, and bisexual investors have been seeking and "outing" corporations with gay-friendly policies and have been backing those companies in a show of financial clout. An example of the application of this forward social dynamic would be Trillium Asset Management, which has at least once scored a "perfect 10" on the Gay and Lesbian Values Index (glvindex). With an investment focus called Socially Responsible Investing (SRI), this company seeks to provide investment returns in keeping with industry standards, while at the same time maintaining "unique focus on social research and advocacy."

Corporations that have taken careful strides to bring their standards up to date with regard to societal equality appear to be gaining in popularity with gay and gay-friendly investors, as evidenced by their placement on and recognition of the glvindex. SC Johnson acknowledged it's high ranking on the glvindex in a company press release that stated in part: "To us, diversity is about building the best, most talented workforce that mirrors the marketplace, and motivating them with an environment that enables people to be themselves and contribute freely and effectively."

Some other big names have gained recognition as gay-friendly corporations, including Aetna Inc. (NYSE: AET), Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL), Chevron Corp. (NYSE: CVX) and IBM (NYSE: IBM). These companies, and dozens of others like them, have chosen to adopt policies that recognize the realities of social diversity. While the majority of these companies are not outwardly expressive of their atmosphere of tolerance, they nonetheless have brought their standards up to date. A comprehensive list of America's top 100 gay and lesbian friendly corporations can be found at WorldNetDaily.com.

It's a new world out there, and same-sex couples are demanding to have their equal part of it. Whether you like it or not, homosexuality is a powerful reality of our world. Gays, lesbians and bisexually oriented people are here to stay, and they want you to know that this is their world too. Now, let's all just get over it and let's move on, shall we?

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Gary E. (NASDAQ: AAPL) to sell its iPhone in the Middle East, Africa and several European countries. Well, wasn't it just Monday that we've heard that Apple has signed deals with Singapore's Singapore Telecommunications Ltd and three of its affiliates to bring the iPhone to four Asian countries later this year? And wasn't it last week that Vodafone Group (NYSE: VOD) signed a deal with Apple to sell the iPhone in ten of its markets? That was just what I remembered offhand. Seems like Apple has pretty much signed deals with companies to sell the iPhone nearly worldwide. Let's check that:

From the Vodafone deal we have: Australia, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, Italy, India, Portugal, New Zealand, South Africa and Turkey

From the SingTel deal we have: Singapore, India, the Philippines and Australia

From the Orange deal we have: Austria, Belgium, the Dominican Republic, Egypt, Jordan, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Switzerland and African markets

Also, America Movil SAB (NYSE: AMX) will start selling the iPhone in 16 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean

Rogers Communications Inc (NYSE: RCI) signed a deal to sell the iPhone in Canada

Telecom Italia SpA will also sell the iPhone in Italy

The iPhone is already being sold by AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T) in the United States, O2 in Britain, T-Mobile in Germany and Orange in France.

What's missing? Not much, mainly small markets, but how about two big ones: China and Japan.
If you recall, early in the year, Apple and China Mobile have called off talks to launch the iPhone to Chinese consumers. Since then, China Mobile expressed renewed interest, but nothing has been announced yet.
And Japan? Japan will have to wait for the 3G version of the iPhone since the current iPhone doesn't work on Japna's networks. However, reports indicated there have been talks with NTT DoCoMo (NYSE: DCM) there.

Having these two markets under its belt would indeed have Apple selling -- or soon to be selling -- the iPhone in almost every market. And in markets where it isn't officially selling (yet or at all), many are using unlocked iPhones.

Apple's goal is to sell 10 million iPhones by the end of the year. From its quarterly results, though, Apple seemed a little behind. But with all the upcoming markets where the iPhone will launch and with the upcoming 3G version -- rumored to be launched on June 9 -- it is no wonder analysts are expecting Apple to beat that number. And with Apple, anything can happen.

[If I have missed a market, or if you have more updated information, please fill us in}.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Before the bell: JCP, WMT, AAPL, GM, GOOG, MSFT ...

Filed under: Before the bell, Analyst reports, Analyst upgrades and downgrades, Google (GOOG), Microsoft (MSFT), Yahoo! Specifically, the broker downgraded J.C. Penney (NYSE: JCP) and Nordstrom Inc. (NYSE: JWN) to Neutral from Buy after its commodity team upped 2008 oil price forecasts to $149 a barrel.
Still, Goldman upgraded TJX Cos. (NYSE: TJX) to Buy from Neutral and removed Kohl's Corp. (NYSE: KSS) from its conviction-buy list in favor of Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE: WMT).

By now I'm getting confused with all the deals Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) is signing with wireless operators to sell the iPhone in different countries around the world. I believe the past two weeks we heard of at least two deals, including one with a S.Korean company. Today, French wireless operator Orange said it has signed a deal to sell its iPhone in the Middle East, Africa and several European countries. Orange will be the exclusive iPhone provider in Belgium and Romania. It seems that by now Apple's got the world covered.

General Motors Corp. (NYSE: GM) is apparently considering launching its Chevrolet brand in South Korea. In its attempt to stay ahead of fast growing Toyota (NYSE: TM), GM will try to capture a larger share of S.Korea's growing market for imported cars.

As Yahoo! (NASDAQ: YHOO) is trying to keep Icahn off its board back, it keeps talking about a search advertising partnership with Google Inc (NASDAQ: GOOG), according to a Reuters source.

And Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) also keeps to other business these times. The software giant joined The One Laptop Per Child project as the green-and-white "XO" computers now can run Windows in addition to their homegrown Linux-based interface. This could further the cause of the organization.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Newspaper wrap-up: Yahoo tries to conclude deal with Google

Filed under: Newspapers, Magazines, Google (GOOG), Yahoo!
RIM will come out with a touchscreen version of its Blackberry, probably in the third quarter. The decision is based on a false premise, which is that people want to buy an "iPhone" from someone other than Apple.

Neither made any progress.

As infantile as the reasoning may seem, Apple built a nearly perfect product, which has been confirmed by strong demand , and plans to improve on it with features like 3G capability. Competition cannot replace what the customer views as irreplaceable.

The firm's RealPlayer product downloads and streams audio, video, and other multimedia content. Its RealOne software and subscription service provides access to news, sports and entertainment content. Its Rhapsody digital music service delivers more than 1 billion songs per year. Its RealArcade is one of the largest casual games destinations on the Web.
The firm pleased investors last week, when it reported Q1 EPS of two cents and revenues of $147.6 million. Analysts had been looking for a loss of three cents and $141.6 million. Management also guided Q2/FY08 estimates above consensus views, announced a $50 million share repurchase program and said it intended to spin off its global casual games business. Kaufman Brothers reiterated its "buy" rating on the shares and boosted its price target to $9.

The stock popped above 30-day moving average support on the news and then began to consolidate the gain in a bullish "pennant" pattern. Prices frequently exit pennants moving in the same direction they were traveling on entry. In this case, that would be to the upside.

Brokers recommend the issue with five "strong buys", four "buys" and seven "holds". Analysts expect a 20% average annual growth rate, through the next five years. The RNWK Price to Sales ratio (1.80), Price to Book ratio (1.20) and Price to Cash Flow ratio (12.73) compare favorably with industry, sector and S&P 500 averages. Institutional investors hold about 53% of the outstanding shares. Over the past 52 weeks, the stock has traded between $5.07 and $8.59. A stop-loss of $6.30 looks good here.

The deal values CNet at about $1.8 billion and push CBS to among the 10 most popular Internet companies in the United States. According to Portfolio.com, media conglomerate Time Warner (NYSE: TWX) would like to see its HBO programming distributed on Apple's best-of-breed digital service. An announcement of a deal could be forthcoming very soon.

While some many question the move since HBO is a premium subscription service and could conceivably lose some of its allure, I think it is smart strategy. Digital distribution isn't going away, and HBO needs to be part of every platform, even iTunes. Plus, imagine the possibilities to really cash in here. What if the finale of The Sopranos had been sold on iTunes before it aired? Little experiments like this would not only be valuable in terms of testing contemporary theories about distribution paradigms in the 21st century, but they might also be profitable.

Perhaps the key element of this story is that it seems as if Time Warner was able to convince Apple that its content is worth more than the typical iTunes price point of $1.99. This is important because price elasticity will ultimately determine the overall value of a content library. Apple would, of course, like to charge the bare minimum to the users of its hardware, but where does that leave an HBO? No, HBO would be smart in starting as high as possible in terms of price and then adjusting after a full analysis.

I look forward to seeing this agreement announced, and if it is, I think HBO will not only make some money with Apple, but it will find that the pay-cable channel's brand equity will be boosted in the bargain. Some iTune users might actually be prompted to subscribe. HBO is known as a home for quality programs -- I loved the old Tales From the Crypt series -- and it may soon be known as an iTunes top seller.

Reviewing the stocks in order of lowest to highest P/E ratio (TTM):

It is interesting to note that only two of the eight have a below market P/E ratio, while only two are average. On the other hand, four are double the average and beyond, which leads me to believe the overall market consensus is that it is still very early in the game for these stocks and their futures are yet to be determined. The P/E ratios of the four are also the most volatile as are the stock prices.

The RoE is a common measure of company management effectiveness. If this is your guide and you are a Yahoo shareholder, then you might have a strong desire to see Microsoft's unsuccessful bid for Yahoo be accepted. Even if you did not get the full value based on CEO Jerry Yang's vision (or ego), you might see far greater growth under the new management.

The RoA makes Yahoo's management seem even more inept, earning only a fraction of Microsoft's shareholder value. My pal Warren would frown on Yahoo's poor showing in these categories. Providing shareholder value is chief among his pursuits, and since he is the largest shareholder of Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK.A), he continues to benefit the most from this goal.

It is impossible to predict the future with any great reliability or consistency, but if one were to look for a secure investment for the future with demonstrated success and the potential of being a part of growing industries, then only Microsoft appears to fit the bill. It is the only company among the eight that is fairly priced and increases shareholder value in a big way based on these metrics.

Two other criteria I look at but did not review here are dividends and cash-flow. In that regard, Microsoft would also prove rewarding.

Other than ports, roads and parking lots, governments are spending more and more on infrastructure, especially water, electricity and telecommunications, and funds for such undertakings are greatly required.

Research In Motion (NASDAQ: RIMM) today introduced the BlackBerry Bold smartphone. While it was hailed an iPhone killer by some, the company continues to position the BlackBerry as a smartphone for business and heavy users, rather than try to cut into Apple's consumer market. According to RIM's statement, "the BlackBerry Bold is designed to give business professionals and power users unprecedented functionality and performance in an intuitive BlackBerry smartphone. It is the first BlackBerry smartphone to support tri-band HSDPA high-speed networks around the world and comes with integrated GPS and Wi-Fi, as well as a rich set of multimedia capabilities." If you wondered, the QWERTY keyboard is still there, but its most amazing feature is apparently the display. While RIMM is up 1.6% in premarket trading, some think it's in for a bruising.

And meanwhile, of course, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) is continuing its push to bring the iPhone worldwide. Singapore Telecommunications Ltd said it and its mobile associates -- Bharti Airtel Ltd, Globe Telecom Inc and Australian unit Optus -- will bring the iPhone to Singapore, India, Australia and the Philippines later this year as they had signed the agreement with Apple.
As for the 3G iPhone, it may launch when Steve Jobs gives his keynote address on June 9, the first day of the 2008 World Wide Developers conference. While no announcement was made, Fortune has confirmed the date of the keynote with Apple public relations.

Just like a never ending video game, the saga of Electronic Arts (NASDAQ: ERTS) Take-Two Interactive Software (NASDAQ: TTWO) still hasn't come to a conclusion. But perhaps it is a step closer. ERTS announced late Friday it received debt financing commitments of up to $1 billion for its $2 billion tender offer for smaller rival Take-Two.

Also expected to report today is LDK Solar Co. (NYSE: LDK), the recently popular with investor solar energy company. Last week, LDK announced a 5-year agreement to supply multicrystalline solar wafers to German chipmaker Qimonda, or Centrosolar. Analysts expect LDK to report a first-quarter profit of 39 cents a share. LDK shares are trading nearly 1.5% higher in premarket trading.

Following FedEx (NYSE: FDX)'s warning, United Parcel Services (NYSE: UPS) shares have been declining over 1% in extended trading.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

SingTel to push Apple (AAPL) iPhone into Asia

Filed under: Launches, Competitive strategy, Apple Inc (AAPL), Nokia Corp. While the moves does not get the device into the huge China market, it does go a long way to helping Apple reach its iPhone sales goals and increases the likelihood that the company will have strong earning late this year and into next.

To be successful in these markets, Apple will probably need a 3G version of it smarphone, but word is that the feature will be coming soon.

Despite its success in the US, Apple is at a disadvantage to other Smartphone companies like Nokia (NYSE: NOK) and Samsung, They have been in the Asian markets for years. It is not likely that they will part with that market share easily. Both companies have brought out multi-media and music stores of their own in the hope of competing with iTunes.

Apple probably already has several million unit sales in these markets locked up. The iPhone, in its unlock version, is already used on networks in Asia. The Apple brand is strong in the region because of the iPod.

The iPhone still has a chance to be Apple's most successful product, at least financially. Every big country where the iPhone is offered by a major carrier brings the company closer to that goal.

Apple has other businesses. RIM has only smartphones.

So as not to be bested RIM has a new BlackBerry. According to The Wall Street Journal, the device, called Bold, "runs on high-speed 3G wireless networks that carriers are rolling out to handle media-rich features." It also has multi-media features for downloading music.

The launch misses a critical factor in business smartphone devices. Enterprise users probably have little interest in BlackBerry beyond its e-mail features. The fact that the phone runs on faster 3G networks added to the function. Putting multi-media features into the product does not. It simply adds cost. The 3G capability will also help sales outside the US where 3G is more widely deployed.

RIM has a problem. While it is not likely the BlackBerry will ever become a music player, the new 3G iPhone may well attract business users with better e-mail, calendar, and web-searching features. The iPhone also sell well because it is consider "next-generation" with its touch pad. It also benefits from the "halo" effect from the company's iPod and iTunes products.

Apple can add e-mail to the iPhone and have a device that can cut across business and consumer users. It is not clear that BlackBerry can ever get beyond its core enterprise market.

For the most part, if you followed my list of recommendations, you would have had your very own "Fiesta de Finance." (See Week in Preview - May 5)

The earnings season is still in full swing and should provide a great deal of action for the companies that will be reporting. But these companies will have to fight through a few new economic barriers. With oil pushing past historic levels and questions beginning to surface concerning the ability of the investor to continue to support a market that has so many headwinds, the mood is likely to shift moving forward. It is time for discipline, short and simple. Now, more than ever investors need a plan. I cover this strategy in my book, The Disciplined Investor.

In the last installment of The Week in Preview, I was looking for party opportunities in honor of Cinco de Mayo. This week, Misery is the theme. That is the only word that comes to mind with oil at a level that you would have never expected, a massive and unrelenting credit and housing crisis and a banking system that is defunct.

Monday - May 12

We start the week with a report from IndyMac Bancorp (NYSE: IMB). This bank is smack in the middle of the housing problem. It is primarily a lending company that facilitates loans for single-family homes. It's also involved in the origination and trading of mortgages. How does that sound to you as an investment? Shares have slid from $23 in October 2007 to an unbelievable level of $3.50 recently. Ouch... If you are a shareholder still holding on with hope and a prayer for something...anything, keep on dreaming. The good news is that the stock is sporting a yield of 29%. But, if you think that yield is going to be maintained, I have a bridge for sale. Estimates are for a loss of $1.92 per share for the quarter.

Sirius Satellite Radio (NASDAQ: SIRI) can finally show the world that satellite radio is the next big thing. With much of the confusion over the XM Satellite Radio (NASDAQ: XMSR) merger out of the way, we will now have the ability to see this company shine. Or not. The chart is in a clear downward trend, the fundamentals are appalling and the company is expected to post a loss of 7 cents for the quarter. But there is always next quarter I suppose.

Pacific Ethanol (NASDAQ: PEIX) has been feeling some pain of late. Between high corn prices, limited use of ethanol and unfavorable legislative actions, it has been an ugly ride for investors. Intuitively, you would think that alternative fuels, especially ethanol would have a great opportunity with oil over $120 per barrel. First Call shows analysts estimating a 9 cent per share loss for the period. It seems that revenue of $154 million is not enough to show profitability. Where does this stock go from here? Probably sideways for the time being.

Zoltek. Zoltek. Zoltek. (NASDAQ: ZOLT) This name is synonymous with aggravation and disappointment. In fact, in the investment dictionary, next to the word "horror-show" is this company's logo. It is not because of any particular problem other than the fact that shareholders are getting massacred. Interestingly, EPS growth has been reasonably good. Yet, slowing sales have caused shares to drop by 50% since January. Here is the kick: Institutional ownership is growing. In the last year the number of funds that own shares has doubled. What do they know that we don't? Revenue is expected to approach $50 million for the quarter with EPS estimated to be 22 cents.

Tuesday - May 13

The day starts with the release of monthly retail sales. Economists are expecting somewhere between 0-0.2% growth for April. This is a key number as all eyes are on the consumers.

It seems that eDiets (NASDAQ: DIET) has been taking the idea of dieting all the way to its share price. Shares are down an impressive 50 percent this year alone! You would have only thought that was possible with bariatric surgery. It is probable that the shedding of shareholder value will continue with this quarter's earnings release. The dieticians analysts are expecting additional earnings losses -- if that is even possible. First Call has put the quarterly loss estimate at 13 cents on $7.6 million of revenue.

Given Imaging (NASDAQ: GIVN) should be renamed: Taken Beating. The chart looks like one of those carnival slides that my kids love to ride. That ride is disgusting at best. What nerve they have making me sit on a filthy and torn potato sack. What do they take us for anyway? If you are the type that likes slides, go play with Given. Maybe you can even ask management to let you play with their wireless imaging systems for gastrointestinal tracks. HEY! Maybe we can introduce this technology to the eDiets team to help with their diet studies. For the patient investor, EPS growth looks to increase sometime in 2009. For now though, the quarterly loss is expected to be 4 cents on revenue of $27.27 million.

Rounding out the day's vomit-fest is Whole Foods (NASDAQ: WFMI). Here is another example of a company that should be renamed. You see, Half-Snacks shares have been rotting for the past two years, even in the face of several dividend increases and share buyback programs. The company's P/E is approaching 25 forward and earnings growth is expected to be 13%. This makes the PEG ratio a hot 1.92. As the robot in Lost in Space would say: "This does not compute." First Call estimates are for earnings of 30 cents per share on $1.892 billion of revenue. At least the food is good for you.

Wednesday - May 14

The Consumer Price Index has been showing massive gains when including all items. The effect of higher oil and food are trickling down to pockets and purses, causing the economy to slow. Economists believe that the Core-CPI will come in with a 0.2% monthly increase and CPI will be 0.3% higher.

Freddie Mac (NYSE: FRE) is planning on showing us how it fared in these tumultuous times. His darling bigger sister Fannie did a really nice job of evaporating a couple of billion dollars last week. You know what they say: "The family that lends together, offends together." Earnings losses are expected to approach 93 cents per share on $1.43 billion of revenue. Do you want to bet on that? Housing is the worst it has been in decades, the delinquency rate is abysmal, defaults are rising, bankruptcies are everywhere and Freddie is right in the middle of the action. Here is my vision: Freddie will miss earnings by a fair margin. Then, it will announce a $5 billion offering of preferred stock and tell us that this is the last time they will need capital and everything will be fine. Shareholders will rejoice and send the stock up, after first moving it down sharply. A day later, shares will be down again once investors wake from their concussions. Wait a minute -- didn't something like that happen with just last week with sissy-bear? (Click here for the real story on FNM and FRE.)

Want more? Can you feel the pain yet? It is like sliding down a razor blade naked into a pool of rubbing alcohol.
For the sick and twisted, take a crack at Salary.com (NASDAQ: SLRY) or maybe Rubio's (NASDAQ: RUBO). These are more examples of how not to invest. Then again, there is the annual need for tax write-offs I suppose.

Thursday - May 15

Initial Jobless claims for May are first up today. The major concern is that the continuing benefits number is increasing. This means that more people are losing jobs and not finding employment. So far, the good news is that unemployment levels are coming in below levels seen in previous recessions. Any spike will assuredly unnerve investors.

Isn't it time for downloadable movies yet? Blockbuster (NYSE:BBI) would have been the heir apparent for this, but NOOOOOOOOOOOO...Something is just not clicking here. Maybe it is the company policy of "no late fees" that really doesn't exist. Maybe it is the fact that Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX) and Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) are eating their popcorn. Maybe it is the very bad idea they had of acquiring Circuit City (NYSE:CC). Whatever the excuse, the earnings growth looks pitiful and the debt load this company is carrying is very concerning. We shall see if it can meet expectations of 14 cents per share on a whopping $1.443 billion of revenue.

Want to make a grown man cry? Tell him he owns 20,000 shares of Mesa Air (NASDAQ: MESA). Mesa is right! The is the story of being at the wrong place at the wrong time. Rising fuel costs along with a recessionary environment have pushed this company's shares down 75% since January. Say this with me: There is still hope... there is always hope. So, hope that it meets estimates of a loss approaching 5 cents per share and show revenues of $325 million.

Last on the list, and definitely least, is Thornburg Mortgage (NASDAQ:TMA). A true thorn in the side of any investor, this is a simple disaster. Shares have slid along with the housing meltdown and a near-term recovery is questionable. Analysts are looking for a $2.36 per share loss for the quarter on $90 million of revenue. You can derive a sense of insane comfort with the fact that management only owns 1% of the outstanding shares. Translated: Management doesn't even think there is a future here.

Friday - May 16

The Michigan Sentiment numbers are released at 10:00 am. Economists at Briefing.com are suggesting another drop to 62 from 69. This number has been deteriorating for the past months. Remember, in December it stood at 75.

After the close, Abercrombie (NYSE: ANF) is reporting quarterly earnings. How cool is that? AFTER THE CLOTHES...It is remarkable that with all of the headwinds and problems we are seeing within the economy, this stock has actually held up rather well. Blame it on the weak dollar, blame it on the fashion, blame it on luck. No matter, this should be an interesting quarter as most specialty retailers are having a very tough time making ends meet. Analysts are looking for 65 cents per share, the same as a year ago. Revenue is expected to rise to $809 million for the period. AFTER THE CLOTHES..HAH!

Going by ad campaigns alone, you would think that every person -- or, at least every cool person -- had abandoned their Windows PCs and hoisted themselves onto the Macintosh bandwagon. Not so. The truth is that PCs far outnumber Macs in the market. The big-business worlds of finance, law, medicine use predominantly PC, while the areas of video production, web design and art use Mac. These computers do most of the same things (play games and DVDs, word-process, create web pages, store and play music) but they are completely different operating systems. Even though Apple computers now include the Intel processor that makes it possible to use Windows-only applications, it can still be hard to compare products.

But what about the companies themselves? What does the Apple brand signify that the Dell brand does not? And vice versa.

Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL): Providing innovative products and a user-friendly interface, Apple has turned the whole computer thing into a fashion accessory. For someone who used Dell products for years and then switched to Mac, the difference is like night and day. A Mac is so easy to use. With a clean interface, a near-universal compatibility with external products and tools, these computers are a beautiful breeze. And now that Macs include Intel processors, one can switch back and forth between a Windows interface and a Mac interface, making previous incompatibilities (software, games, etc.) now perfectly compatible. And when it comes to customer service (see below) Apple really socks the house.

Dell (NASDAQ: DELL): The Apple brand may have a glossy sheen, but when it comes down to it, Dell's products can run circles around your typical Mac. Offering more memory, speed and features, a Dell laptop -- when set against a comparable Mac -- also comes through the finish line with a slightly lower price tag. Also, Dell systems are compatible with Apple's innovative (and ubiquitous) iPod products. But no matter how you slice it, Dell falls short in the customer service arena. Not only does Dell grade low among consumers, it also lacks Apple's neighborhood appeal: Dell -- long a catalog-oriented business -- has suffered in trying to imitate the Apple Store success, which allows customers to see actual products and talk to actual Mac "gurus." Dell has attempted the retail thing with Dell Direct stores, and it's also in talks with Radio Shack to expand its sidewalk visibility.

Therefore, this battle is still somewhat up in the air. Dell won the war (long ago) by providing big businesses and corporations with truckfulls of laptops and desktops that are still being used, but Apple has won the peace by courting and satisfying today's key market: the consumer.

But Unilever has been proactive and has raised prices 4.8% in the quarter to offset its rising costs. In fact, the company said revenue will beat its forecast for the first time in six years on increased prices and sales of Dove soap, Hellmann's mayonnaise and Lipton tea. First-quarter net income climbed 33%, exceeding analysts' estimates.

As expected, April retail sales have so far indeed been strong, although there are some ares weakness is seen.

Costco (NASDAQ: COST) shares are up 1.2% in premarket trading after the warehouse club retailer said April same-store sales increased 8%, beating analysts' expectations of 6.1%.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc.
The more luxurious items, though, such as lingerie sold at Limited Brands (NYSE: LTD) have seen a slowdown as the company said that April same-store sales fell 5%, falling short of the 2.3% sales decline analysts had anticipated.
