Hot Storage Company Fusion-io Goes for an IPO

Over the past couple years, the storage market has been the target of big acquisitions from companies like HP (HPQ) and Dell (DELL). With cloud computing -- as well as the emergence of data-hungry applications -- the growth in the market has been strong.

To capitalize on this, some of the top companies are looking at IPOs. For example, Fusion-io made its filing this week. The lead underwriters include Goldman Sachs (GS) and Morgan Stanley (MS).

Closing Bell: Bull & Bears Still Fight For Show (GM, HPQ, SLXP, TM, TGT, UAL)

Stocks tried to open positive today but geopolitics and oil kept things from being a solid win throughout the trading day. Oil's gain is spiking gasoline higher in local markets and soft commodities took a breather. Weekly jobless claims went back under the 400,000 mark again despite dollar weakness, but new home sales were down by the double-digits again.

Here were today's unofficial closing bell levels:

Dow Jones 12,068.50 -37.28 (-0.31%)
S&P 500 1,306.10 -1.30 (-0.10%)
Nasdaq 2,737.90 +14.91 (0.55%)

Hewlett-Packard Down Big After Latest Report

Oh dear. Did you catch the price action in Hewlett-Packard Company (HPQ)? Somewhat hard to miss, I would imagine. Unless you purposely avoid stocks that are down 10%.

At the time of this writing, shares of the PC maker were actually down well over 10% to $43.09. And talk about volume! It's multiple times the 30-day average. I have a feeling the market is trying to say something to management. Even with all the other macro concerns that Wall Street is dealing with, shareholders of Hewlett-Packard have to pay attention to this move.

Is Hewlett-Packard Undervalued?

As outlined in November 2010, Hewlett-Packard Company (HPQ), first discussed on April 24, 2009, at a price of $35.80, has made it through its autumn rough-patch, and the stock has since moved further norther this winter to trade at/near $48.

And needless to add, Hewlett is still preferred here, and with a P/E of 10.5, HPQ is still on sale.

Closing Bell: Tech Giveth, Tech Taketh Away (DDS, FFIV, FDO, HPQ, MS, PLXS, WEN)

Another day of tech concerns took the markets lower during earnings season. Consumer confidence was higher and jobless claims were lower and the dollar was trying to show some strength. Still, housing data was mixed and inflation was picking up in the Philadelphia Fed report this morning. The biggest issue today is that many of these stocks were just up too much ahead of earnings. Despite the caution, the DJIA and S&P500 were close to and even above the red-line for part of the day.

Here were today's unofficial closing bell levels:

Dow Jones 11,822.80 -2.49 (-0.02%)
S&P 500 1,280.26 -1.66 (-0.13%)
Nasdaq 2,704.29 -21.07 (-0.77%)

Dell Strikes a Deal for Compellent

Dell logoOne of the big themes in technology for 2010 has been the scramble to buy up data storage companies. Perhaps the most interesting transaction was the bidding war for 3Par. HP (HPQ) paid a premium price to beat out Dell (DELL).

As margins on PCs and laptops continue to fall, the large computer makers are trying to find ways to boost margins. And data storage products are a key way to do this.

Riverbed Enters Bidding War Against Hewlett-Packard

Riverbed Technology (RVBD - option chain) shares are rising today on reports that the company is in negotiations to buy Radware (RDWR) for $47 per share. Rival Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) reportedly has offered $45 per share for RDWR. If you think that the stock won't fall by too much in the coming months, then now could be a good time to look at a bullish hedged trade on RVBD.

RVBD opened this morning at $35.50. So far today the stock has hit a low of $34.58 and a high of $36.91. As of 12:20, RVBD is trading at $34.99 up 0.17 (0.5%). The chart for RVBD looks neutral and S&P gives RVBD a neutral 3 STARS (out of 5) hold ranking.

Closing Bell: A Bounce Off of Support? (AMRN, IRE, BP, HPQ)

Some may think that this was a full day for investors. It wasn't. Many investment professionals were still heading back after a long Thanksgiving weekend. Overseas markets were soft and many question the bailout in Ireland. Oil rose on the day after dollar weakness and the U.S. markets managed a serious comeback after dollar weakness that almost took markets from deep in the red-zone to almost positive before late-day sellers showed up. Maybe that DJIA 11,000 matters after all...

Here were today's closing bell levels:

Dow Jones 11,052.49 -39.51 (-0.36%)
S&P 500 1,187.76 -1.64 (-0.14%)
Nasdaq 2,525.22 -9.34 (-0.37%)

Hewlett-Packard Shareholders Sue Over CEO Exit

HPQ logoHewlett-Packard (HPQ - option chain) stock is trading lower today after the company was sued by shareholders seeking information about the company's firing of former CEO Mark Hurd. The suing shareholders will seek "monetary relief" on behalf of the company. If you think this stock won't be rising too far in the coming months, then it could be a good time to look at a bearish hedged play on HPQ.

This morning, HPQ opened at $42.58. So far today the stock has hit a high of $42.70 and a low of $42.18. As of 12:10, HPQ is trading at $42.25, down $0.95 (-2.2%). The chart for HPQ looks bullish and S&P gives HPQ a positive 5 STARS (out of 5) strong buy .

Hewlett-Packard: Sell-Off Appears to Be Over

Hewlett-Packard Company (HPQ), first discussed on April 24, 2009 at a price of $35.80, appears to have made it through its summer swan dive.

Shares swooned from about $55 to $37.32 -- coming close to the sell/stop loss at $36, but then found support and have since moved back above the key, 50-day moving average and the $40-level.

Hewlett is still preferred, here, and look at the recent price dip this way: with a P/E of about 9, HPQ is on sale -- for those investors who can tolerate the risk.

Hewlett-Packard in the Green After Earnings Report

Hewlett-Packard Company (HPQ) was up 2% to $44.19 at the close of today's bell. Unfortunately, that wasn't too close to the 52-week high of $54.75. Then again, it was comfortably above the 52-week low of $37.32. And, volume was super-strong.

Alas, the chart doesn't look too appealing, does it? The equity seems to be in a downtrend, and while traders might be able to make some money, long-term believers had no choice but to consistently add on the dips to improve the cost basis.
