Serious Money: Jumpy stock market but Special 'K' doing fine

What a week it was and it is starting off with more of the same! The day before Halloween the market gets spooked. The Dow drops 200 one day, rises 200 the next, and falls 250 to close the week. Yes, financial pundits could point to meaningful stories about the dollars rise, consumer spending sagging, the recession ending and so forth to explain market reactions but there is more to it than that.

Even among the 15 positions discussed in Where should granny put $50,000? only the Vanguard Total Bond Market exchange-traded fund (NYSE: BND) and the Kellogg Co (NYSE: K) were up last Friday. Good thing I advised "granny" to put half her funds in the ETF.

Barron's, Citigroup bet on a comeback for Motorola

An article in Barron's suggests that Motorola (NYSE: MOT) is on the verge of regaining some of its former mojo. The company recently offered a solid outlook for the remainder of the year, and it could garner new business after debuting two smartphones featuring Google's (NASDAQ: GOOG) Android operating system -- namely, the Droid and the Cliq.

The author cites analyst Ed Snyder of Charter Equity Research, who believes Motorola is on the cusp of "an extended upswing in handsets ... over the next several quarters." Snyder believes that the firm's ailing handset division could achieve break-even results as soon as the second quarter of 2010.

Boeing announces more 787s, receives an upgrade

According to FlightGlobal, Boeing (NYSE: BA) is going to "surge" (a very popular word nowadays) 787 production early in order to meet customer demand. The surge is part of the establishment of the Charleston 787 line. Boeing will use "transitional surge capability" until the second 787 line is on line; this capability will take place at Boeing's current Washington line. As far as the new South Carolina plant, the facility will support the testing and the delivery of the airplanes.

In addition to this news, Boeing received an upgrade from Macquarie Research, as the airliner was elevated to "outperform" from "neutral." Valuation was the main reason for the upgrade, as the brokerage feels that the current pullback may afford a good buying opportunity.
