On August 14, I posted on how Apple can't seem to shake the allegations of bad working conditions at one of its overseas factories that manufactures the iPod. In response to these allegations, Apple immediately dispatched an audit team comprised of members from its human resources, legal and operations groups to carry out a thorough investigation of the conditions at the manufacturing site.
According to the report found on Apple's website, "The team reviewed personnel files and hiring practices and found no evidence whatsoever of the use of child labor or any form of forced labor." Likewise, "A majority of employees interviewed were pleased with the work environment and specifically noted the opportunity for advancement, widespread year-end bonuses, and the reputation of the supplier in the industry," Apple said in the report. "Additionally, employees consistently mentioned that they felt safe and secure in both the workplace and the dormitories."
The only noted violation was that there were three off-site dormitories found to offer unsuitable living conditions. Two of the dormitories were originally built as factories and now contain a large number of beds, and from Apple's perspective it was too impersonal. The third dorm contained triple bunks, which in Apple's opinion did not provide enough personal space. Currently, the factory owner is in the process of building new dormitories, noting that this construction effort was underway before the probe began.
The interesting part about the whole scenario is that the facilities offer dormitories for employees to live in, rent-free, along with recreation facilities, cafeterias, lounges, Internet cafes, a post office, a hospital, a supermarket and even a communal swimming pool. It looks as if Apple has taken the initiative to ensure that it does not follow in the same footsteps as Nike -- or at least is making it seem that way to the public.
